Opal Fire by Barbra Annino
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
When a fire destroys her cousin’s bar and the insurance company claims arson, Stacy Justice, a local reporter, decides it’s up to her to clear her cousin’s name. Unfortunately, trouble seems to follow Stacy wherever she goes. After discovering a long forgotten body in the charred remains of the bar’s basement, Stacy realizes there is more to this fire than meets the eye.
Stacy Justice is a fun, quirky and quick witted protagonist. I am a sucker for independent and strong-willed female characters, all of which describe Stacy. Even better, she’s a powerful witch, despite the fact she’s set her witchy ways behind her…for now.
Stacy’s family is just as much fun as she is. Her feisty cousin, Cinnamon, and her witchy grandmother and aunts all add just the right spice to the story. And, of course, let’s not forget the men in Stacy’s life. Her dog and familiar, Thor, is her pride and joy and plays an important role throughout the book. Leo, the police chief and current boyfriend, is handsome and loveable. However,Chance, Stacy’s former flame, keeps catching her eye. What a problem to have, right?
I gave this book three stars, mainly because it was a little slow moving for me. The plot itself is more of a murder mystery than a paranormal murder mystery. There are some witchy moments, but mainly the book introduces us to all the characters and sets us up for the next installment. Needless to say, it was interesting enough for me to purchase and read the rest of the series.
