A little Christmas spirit

Monday, December 10, 2012
Do you believe in spirits? Ghosts? Yeah, I know, it’s a silly question. I love a good ghost story, which is probably why I’ve always loved Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. That being said,  I’ll admit I’m a skeptic. However, when my great-grandmother died several years ago, there was not a doubt in my mind she would come back to haunt me if I didn’t do exactly as she asked. She wanted me to sing at her funeral. I, of course, did not want to, but I marched my butt right up that aisle and sang her two songs. LOL

Then there are the times a random butterfly flutters right past me when I’m most in need of a hug. Maybe it’s all in my head, but whatever makes you feel good, right?  Sometimes things happen and you have no explanation for it. Today was one of those days.

The weather today is not ideal. It’s cold and rainy; the kind of day you just want to curl up on the couch and not leave the house. While I was walking back to work after lunch, I was struck by a familiar scent– a scent I haven’t smelled in years. There was no one around me. No one had just walked passed. I wasn’t even near any windows, not to mention it was pouring the rain, so no one in their right mind would have their window open anyway. It just lingered there. Strong.

Cherry tobacco.

God, I love that smell. I had almost forgotten it. As a child, I’d sit at the kitchen table with my grandfather and watch him put cherry tobacco in his pipe. I hated smoke – cigarettes, cigars – but that pipe and his cherry tobacco always smelled so good. It was his smell. He, like my grandmother, has been gone for several years.

I stopped and took a deep breath. Still there. I looked around, only to find nothing, no one. A grin spread across my face. I don’t know why, but I'm pretty sure someone special just paid me a visit. :)

  1. I totally believe it. I have had similar experiences myself and never doubted they were anything but a divine visit. When my parents died, both times I had the visit in the form of a dream. These were not fuzzy little dreams that come to you a couple of days later, but life-changing experiences. The Bible is full of instances where God appeared to people in a dream. Keep in mind, I am in NO WAY comparing myself to Joseph with the many brothers or Joseph and Mary. Nevertheless, they happened. I believe that cherry tobacco scent was real and meant just for you!

  2. me too.... i believe that sometimes, God does something special for us just because He loves us and He knows what brings us comfort when we need that extra special hug that comes from something that brings a loving memory or person to mind! it happens to me ALL THE TIME! :)
