National Adoption Month

Thursday, November 03, 2011

November is National Adoption Awareness Month. Many of you reading may not have considered adoption as an option for you or maybe you already have children of your own; however, this doesn’t mean you can’t support adoption awareness month!

There are lots of things you can do to support adoption and those people in your life that have been touched by adoption, be it the birth families, adoptive families or the adoptees. Adoptive Families magazine (which, by the way, is a great, great adoption resource) has listed several things we can do to support adoption during the month of November. Click here to see their calendar of ideas.

One important thing everyone can do is to contact your congressmen (and women) and senators to let them know that you support the extension of the adoption tax credit. President Obama extended all the Bush tax cuts, which included the provisions for the Adoption Tax Credit, for two years to Dec. 31, 2012.  This extension does not apply to the changes made by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act; therefore, the adoption tax credit for 2012 will revert to the pre-2010 credit amount (adjusted for inflation) and will not be refundable.  After 2012, the Adoption Tax Credit will go away, unless legislation is passed to extend it (Davenport, D. August 30, 2011. The Future of the Adoption Tax Credit. Retrieved from http://www.creatingafamily.org/blog/adoption-domestic-adoption-international-adoption-embryo-adoption-foster-care-adoption/future-adoption-tax-credit-2011-2012-2013/ ).

This credit could be a huge help to us and so many others when the time comes for us to adopt. Please support its extension and let your state and national leaders know as well. More information can be found at Creating a Family.
